Timber Trail excites and delights

The spectacular new Timber Trail in the central North Island was formally opened by Conservation Minister Dr Nick Smith, Taupō MP Louise Upston and Olympic cycling legend Sarah Ulmer on 30 March.

“This 85km cycle trail through Pureora Forest Park to Ongarue is a stunner. The huge forest canopy was saved from the chainsaws in an epic conservation battle in the 1970s and the track follows the historic bush tramways and old bulldozer and hauler roads,” Dr Smith says.

“A special feature of the Timber Trail is the eight suspension bridges, including the impressive 141 metre long crossing of the Maramataha Stream set some 55 metres above the stream bed – making it the longest suspension bridge open for cycling in the country.

“The Timber Trail is the tenth New Zealand Cycle Trail to be completed since Prime Minister John key launched the initiative in 2009 with the Green Party. Another 11 are in various stages of development.”

“This initiative is about regional economic development in attracting visitors to new areas of the country as well as encouraging New Zealanders to get out and enjoy the great outdoors.

“This ride is a must do. The scenery is spectacular, the history unique and the track and adventure tourism experience. This new Timber Trail ride will be to cyclists what the Milford Track is to trampers. It’s a real privilege to open this trail and test it out. It is a huge asset to the region and New Zealand.”
